Into Darkness (2013)

 

One could argue that this is a remake of the Wrath of Khan. Not as good as the original but still ok (and better than the last movie in this trilogy). Khan is still a formidable villain even if the Enterprise crew doesn’t have the emotional weight associated with it that we had in the original movie. And, as in the original, there is a part of you that feels just a tiny bit bad for him.

Centuries ago there was an apocalypse. People now live in Saluston. But there is danger in Saluston and now the hunger Derek must lead his people into the world. A fun book if a little fantastical. 

Zardip’s Search for Healthy Wellness (1988)

 

Zardip’s planet is dying so he is sent to Earth in the body of a human boy to learn about health. He befriends a group of teens with a wellness clubhouse who help him to become more healthy. It was a great way to teach health concepts!

The Andromeda Strain by Michael Criction

 

When a new deadly virus from outer space descends on the small town of Piedmont, Arizona, a group of scientists is sent on a super secret mission to determine why an old drunk and a baby were the only survivors. Such a  great book as long as you remember that Cricton likes to info dump! 

Galaxy Quest (1999)

 

Aliens mistake the actors of a Star Trek like show to be heroes. They abduct them to help them fight their archenemies. The shenanigans ensure as these ordinary people who have to become the heroes they played on screen. This movie is great and is often cited as an official Star Trek film endorsed by several Star Trek veterans. 

Enterprise: The First Adventure by Vonda McIntire

 

Captain Kirk has just been handed the Enterprise, taking over from Captain Pike. And it’s not going according to plan. Instead of an exciting new mission he is tasked with ferrying a circus around the galaxy. Instead of his best friend, Gary Mitchell, he is told that his new first officer is the Vulcan Spock. But when they encounter the “World Ship” and a rogue klingon, things are going to get a lot more interesting. 

Earth Star Voyager (1988)

 

In the year 2088 a crew of teenagers are sent from a dying earth to colonize a planet called Demeter. Things don’t go according to plan when they meet up with mutineer Vance Arthur. This movie ends on a bit of a cliffhanger making someone think that it was supposed to be a pilot of a show that was never picked up. It’s silly and long as it sets up the characters but still fun. 

Day of the Tentacle

 Day of the Tentacle is actually a sequel to the older game Maniac Mansion which I have not actually played. Day of the Tentacle is amazing. Basically Dr. Fred has made two living tentacles. The purple tentacle drinks toxic waste and becomes evil. It is up to Bernard, Hoagie, and Laverne to travel to the past, present, and future to save us all from a tentacle take over. It’s silly and it’s great! It’s on Steam if you’re interested. 

Heir Apparent by Vivian Vande Velde

 This book treads the border between sci-fi and fantasy. The story begins as Giannine gets a gift certificate to visit the Rasmussem virtual reality center. She chooses to play a fantasy game called Heir Apparent. Outside the facility, fanatics that think children spend too much time hooked up to these machines have sabotaged the mechanism that controls the games. Giannine is approached by the game’s creator and told that due to the sabotage they cannot disconnect her until she wins the game and that if she does not win within a certain amount of time she will die for real. Giannine then needs to get a magic ring, locate treasure and defeat enemies if she wants to survive her birthday gift. The world of the game is beautiful and an enjoyable fantasy series. 

The Chosen Ones by LuthienTauriel

 Another Star Wars fanfic by me. I do tend to write a lot of Star Wars fics… Anyway this one is based on a concept alluded to by Yesac but never written. Basically the story is that Count Dooku gets to Qui Gon Jin and convinces him to Fall. Obi Wan escapes and rescues Shimi and Anakin. All three go to Mandalore where Obi Wan is “adopted” by Shimi and he marries Satine. It’s the first of a 7 part series, 3 of which are currently are published.

What If…? (2021-2024)

 

Part of the MCU, What If follows one of the “Watchers” a race of beings that watch over the multiverse. Each episode consists of how events in the MCU could have happened differently. For instance, what if Yondu accidently grabbed T’Challa instead of Peter Quill? What if Peggy Carter got the super serum instead of Steve Rogers, ect.? Each season then cumulates with an episode that brings all these disjoined storylines together. It’s a decent show with most of the cast from the MCU revising their roles. 

Wall-E (2008)

 

Humans have destroyed the earth and are orbiting in a space station. On Earth is a small trash robot who has developed sentience. When EVE arrives to try to find life, Wall-E falls in love. They then have to save each other and humans from the malevolent AI.

X Men (2000)

 

The first of the Hugh Jackman X men movies. Magneto wants to make everyone a mutant so that humans won’t persecute mutant kind anymore. Since this causes regular humans to die, the X Men try to stop him. It is probably one of the best X Men movies. 

1994 Baker Street: The Return of Sherlock Holmes (1993)

  Way back in the late 1800s early 1900s, Holmes grew bored with the fact that Moriarty was dead and he couldn’t see any thrill in the chase any more. He puts himself into cryogenic sleep and wakes up in 1994 to Mrs. Hudson’s descendent and doctor Amy Winslow. He then has to solve a new mystery in this new world. 

Star Wars: A New Hope (1977)

 

The movie that started it all. The original Star Wars! Even after nearly 50 years, the special effects in this movie are amazing. Probably because due to the fact that they had to be practical effects…Also since we didn’t have all that computer graphics stuff they had to rely more on story. You really get to know the gang, Luke, Leia, Han. Even the side characters like Ben, the droids, and Chewie get a chance to shine. And Darth Vader is still one of the scariest villains of all time! And Han shot first, I’m sorry. It shows his character growth of “I’ll shoot the bounty hunter first and only looking out for number 1” to him turning around and becoming a genuine rebel. Love, love this movie!

Ghidorah: The Three Headed Monster (1964)

 

The Princess Selina steps out of a plane right before her political enemies blow up her plane. She survives and doesn’t remember anything stating that she is from Venus and she has come to warn people that Ghidorah is coming. Ghidorah, the Creature from Planet X, destroyed Venus long ago. Only the combined might of Godzilla, Rodan, and Mothra can possibly bring down this alien monster. It’s silly like all the Godzilla movies from this era, but it is fun all the same!

Ghosts and Aliens by ValmureEld

 

If you look at ValmureEld’s series Venom was a Good Movie So Sue Me, this is actually the last story listed. But since it’s a prequel to all the tales that come before, I am starting with this one. This is a cute one shot where Eddie and Anne are still together. They have a running joke that their apartment is either haunted or infested by aliens. It’s just a fun little piece of fluff.

Star Trek (2009)

 

A reboot of the original series. 154 years after the birth of Captain James Tiberius Kirk, Romulus’ moon goes supernova. Ambassador Spock (Leonard Nimoy reprising his most famous role), is too late to save the Romulan planet but does manage to save others by creating a black hole where the sun used to be. Spock and a Romulan named Nero are sucked back in time over a hundred years creating an alternate timeline. The characters that we know and love then have to stop Nero who is determined to destroy the Federation in revenge. I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. Star Trek doesn’t have the best movie track record, but this one is good!

The Angel Experiment by James Patterson

 

The first of the Maximum Ride books, the Angel Experiment follows Maximum Ride and the rest of the “flock”, genetically engineered children with bird DNA. The Flock is pursued by the Erasers, human/wolf hybrids, who want to bring them back to “The School” so that further experiments can be performed. When the Erasers capture Angel, the youngest of The Flock, the others leave to try to find her. 

Tomes and Talismans (1986)

 In the 22nd century a malevolent alien race known as the Wipers come to earth and systematically start to destroy all information. A group of librarians set out to create an underground library before evacuating preserving human knowledge. Before she can evacuate a Ms. Bookhart is placed into a deep sleep by “The Universal Being.” 100 years later, Bookhart is found by another group of aliens trying to defeat the Wipers known as the Users. After waking Bookhart teaches the Users how to use the library to defeat the Wipers. This was an educational show on how to use the library. 

Dreamsnake by Vonda McIntire

 

A borderline scifi/fantasy novel, Snake is a healer that uses the venom of snakes to heal. When her dreamsnake is killed by ignorant people, she needs to look for the rare snake so she can resume her career. A great book from a great author. 

The Martian (2015)

 Based on the Andy Weir novel, in this movie we have to once again save Matt Damon. Damon stars as Mark Watney, part of a crew sent to try to colonize Mars. When a sandstorm kicks up, his group leaves him behind, believing him to be dead. It is then a rush to attempt to get him home. One of the greatest moments in the movie is when Sean Bean, who plays Mitch Henderson, has to explain what the Council of Elrond is. This is so funny is that Bean also played Borimor in the Lord of the Rings and was at the Council of Elrond! He got to be on the Council twice!

The Fantastic Voyage (1966)

 

When a Russian scientist gets wounded when the Americans try to bring him over to our side a crew and their ship is miniaturized to enter the body and heal the brain trauma. Actually has great special effects for this day and age as they navigate the body. 

Jedi: Fallen Order

 

Ok, let’s be honest here. I’ve never actually played this game. I don’t own a playstation and really don’t intend to get one any time soon. I have seen a friend play a few minutes though and this game is gorgeous! And I liked the main character Cal Kestis. If I were to get a playstation I would totally buy this game just so I can run around and be a Jedi. As far as I understand, you are a former Jedi Padwan named Cal who gets outed to the Empire when you use the Force to save your friend Prauf. You are then recruited by a former Jedi Knight Cere Junda who is attempting to rebuild the Order. I also liked that it was an original story and not just rehashing the movies. I remember when the sequel came out (and yes there is a sequel called Jedi: Survivor) I got really excited that there might be new Star Wars movie about characters I wasn’t familiar with. When I figured out it was a game, I was so bummed. 

User Unfriendly by Vivian Vande Velde

 

This book takes place in the same universe as Heir Apparent but is about a completely new cast of characters. Like in the other book Arvin and his friends are playing in a fantastical virtual reality game where they are the characters they invented. But when Arvin’s mother, who is also playing, starts to get deathly ill, they will need all their wits to beat the game and return to the real world to save her. This I would say straddles the line between fantasy and science fiction. On the one hand, our characters are playing a extremely advanced virtual reality game. On the other hand they are playing a fantasy game. Vande Velde always does a great job. 

Brothers in Arms by LuthienTauriel

 

Another one of mine. As I have mentioned in previous posts about my own work I have limited the access to my fanfic. I had too many con artists writing to me saying “I drew you this picture, now you owe me money.” I monitor all comments now and only registered users can read my work. Anyway, this is a Star Wars Rebels fanfic. The epilogue of Rebels informs us that Zeb brought Kallus to Lira San, the Lasat home world. This is that story. I had fun writing it because their friendship is one of my favorite relationships in the series.

The Herculoids (1967-1968)

 

In this cartoon, King Zandor with his group of crazy looking creatures including some that just look like giant blobs must keep their world safe from aliens from other galaxies. This was one of those shows that I wouldn’t seek out but would always watch when it popped up on Boomarang. It’s enjoyable. 

Across the Spiderverse (2023)

 

The sequel to Into the Spiderverse. This finds Miles Morales once again teaming up with Gwen Stacy and Peter Parker and a whole new host of Spidermans to stop a villain that was created in the previous movie. It’s a fun movie even if it ended on a major cliffhanger that has yet to be resolved and I found Spiderman Miguel to be extremely annoying. I did enjoy the reference to Spiderman: No Way Home though as another multidimensional Spiderman movie. 

Green Lantern (2011)

 

I don’t think this movie deserves all the hate it gets. Is it good? Not really. Is the CGI horrible? Yes. But hey, Ryan, it got you out of the romcoms and you met your current wife on set. Anyway, the movie follows Hal Jordan, a pilot, who is chosen to be the next Green Lantern. It has a few fun references to other franchises when he is trying to access his lantern. It’s a stupid superhero movie and I still kind of like it. 

The Return of Sherlock Holmes (1987)

 

Jane Watson is bankrupt. She has to sell her English country estate belonging to John Watson (yes, that John Watson). When she goes in, she finds a cryogenic chamber containing one Sherlock Holmes who had come down with Bubonic Plague when he received a booby trapped gift. After curing Holmes, they both go back to America. Jane and Holmes are then pulled into a modern mystery greatly resembling the classic Conan Doyle story “The Sign of the Four.” It is really a decent modern Holmes story. 

Rogue One (2016)

 

Taking place shortly before the events of A New Hope, Rogue One is about the people trying to get the plans for the Death Star safely into the Rebellion’s hands. There are no Jedi, although Chirrut Imwe is a sort of Force wielder. What I loved about this movie is that it was all new characters. Yes Darth Vader makes an appearance and so does an AI Moff Tarkin. Bail Organa does make an appearance. And a bad AI Princess Leia. But for the most part the main characters are people completely new to the franchise. So you don’t know how their story is going to end. And it’s refreshing. 

Rodan (1956)

 

When a mining company digs far down into the earth, they awaken Rodan a giant pterodactyl like creature capable of flying at supersonic speeds. Part of the Toho Godzilla series. It’s stupid, but still fun!

Only a Tranq by ValmureEld

A little one shot where Claire is freaking out because Owen was shot with a raptor tranquilizer in Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom. It’s short and it’s fun.

The Undiscovered Country (1991)

 

In this movie, Kirk and McCoy are accused of killing a Klingon High Chancellor and sentenced to life imprisonment on a prison planet. The crew of the Enterprise, not believing that their captain would do such a thing despite his issues with the klingons, set off to rescue them and thwart a conspiracy to end hostilities with the klingons. One of the better original Star Trek movies.

The Hunger Games (2012)

 

A pretty faithful adaptation of the book and one of the best survival movies I’ve seen in a while. Let’s be honest here I’m not the biggest fan of dystopia media. In fact I wasn’t that crazy about the other books/movies in this series which is why they won’t be talked about here. But I like this first book/movie. I guess because there is a little bit of survival wrapped in it. A thought about whether or not Katniss is going to survive the Hunger Games. It’s as enjoyable as any of these kind of movies can be.
