Vivian Vande Velde sees some plot holes in Rumpelstiltskin.
To quote the back cover of my copy why would the miller say his daughter could
spin straw into gold and why would the king believe the miller in the first
place? And why would old Rumple show up to spin the straw into gold in exchange
for small trinkets and a kid? So in the Rumpelstiltskin Problem she writes
six stories where she "fixes" the problems in the story. Sometimes
the miller's daughter wins, sometimes it's Rumple, and in one story it's
actually the king that wins the day. I think my favorite story is Straw into
Gold where Rumpelstiltskin is actually a young handsome elf who kind of falls
in love with the miller's daughter. The book is a fun romp and an ingenious way
to rewrite a fairy tale.
